The carotid arteries supply the main blood flow to the brain. These arteries can develop blockages through atherosclerosis also known as build up of plaque in the arteries. When such blockages become severe, the risk of stroke significantly increases. Carotid artery disease is not easily detected without proper screening.

The most common risk factors for carotid artery disease include:

  • smoking
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • diabetes
  • heart disease

Surgery may be recommended if upon screening a severe blockage has been identified.
