An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a dilation of a portion of the aorta. The aorta is the largest artery in the body. The aorta is connected to you heart and runs through your chest into your abdomen. At approximately the level of your belly button, the aorta splits into two arteries which provide blood flow to each leg. An aortic aneurysm is a balloon-like bulge of the artery which has an increased risk of rupturing.
Annually, about 200,000 patients are diagnosed with AAA. Six percent of patients over the age of 60 carry this diagnosis. AAA is the 13 leading cause of death in the nation and is responsible for 15,000 deaths yearly.
At Vascular, Interventional & Vein Associates, patients will benefit from the most current minimally invasive techniques for treatment of AAA.
